How To Deal With Blogs and Vacations

Spring officially arrives today at 7:21 p.m. EDT 032011Spring has arrived with people starting to think about planning summer vacations. But this year, some may feel they have a problem because they’ve committed to post to their blogs every day and aren’t sure how they’re going to keep up with it. I’m having a tough time right now just keeping up. This is what’s bugging me today!

Before even summer vacations come around, we have long weekends to deal with. April brings us a long weekend with Good Friday and Easter, in the month of May, we have Victoria Day for the Canadians and Memorial Day for the Americans and I’m sure there are others happening around the globe.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about your blog during these times. What happens if something unexpected comes up and you’re called out-of-town? Wouldn’t it be nice if you had some posts already lined up and ready to publish.

I know I would love not having to worry about my blog during times like that.

We know we can use the scheduling feature to post into the future but first we have to write them. So what do you write about.

Here are some ideas that I’ve offered to others before:

  1. If you love reading, write a short book review, include an excerpt from the book.
  2. If it’s poetry you love, let people know why in a few sentences and include the poem.
  3. Is there a favourite quotation/s that you like. You can do the same here as you did with the poem or book.
  4. Use the WordPress Press this‘ feature and reblog someone else’s post.
  5. Check your ‘Posts I Like‘ and see if there are any you would like to reblog. The feature is right on the page.
  6. Post some photos and tell a story.
  7. Write about your favourite food and maybe post a recipe.
  8. Write shorter posts – make your blog post a 2 or 3-parter.

Which is what I’m doing today! Because if I continue it’s going to be too long. Part 2 with more ideas tomorrow.

The ideas I mentioned above are great to have on hand, ready to publish for those days when you just can’t come up with something or are pressed for time.

What are your plans for the summer?

Will you be taking your blog on vacation with you or will you put up a “Gone Fishing” post?

This is what’s bugging me today!

🙂

Quote for today

A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in.

Some good points Rose. I think I will be putting up a gone fishing post or similar as I wont be able to respond to comments…I suppose we have to be careful blogging does not become “tail” wagging the “dog”! 🙂 if you follow my drift!
    cheers

Ha ha, what’s a vacation? Only joking but I’d love a holiday and I certainly wouldn’t be worrying about my blog. I can understand your predicament though and have to agree with what PiP said. You seem to have got some good ideas to fall back on at least.

  3. March 23, 2011 at 7:26 PM

Good ideas, Rose. I have tried the Scheduling feature and it works just fine. Easy, too.

There are also a LOT of good ideas on the Daily Post blog by Scott Berkun. Check those out and you can go back quite a ways to find one you like. Or Plinky has a few ideas. Scott used some of those, but there are also different ones.

PiP has a point about not being able to comment, as readers might feel neglected. You could put at the end of each post your GONE FISHING sign and explain you will answer comments on your return.

I just faced that, and quit blogging for my time away. It was just too difficult, plus we were supposed to be observing silence for the most part. And, then we had no cell phone where we were, and internet was off on some days. We have more events planned this coming year which will also make it difficult to blog. But all will give me something I feel is worthwhile to write about.

Great suggestions. Some I thought about but it is always good to have a reminder. Other things, like the “press this” feature, I was not aware of and will have to check that out. I never thought about what happens when I go on vacation, I just assumed I’d take my laptop with me and that’s that. Than again, that’s not really a vacation is it? As Piglet in Portugal pointed out, shouldn’t let the “tail wag the dog!”

Scheduling ahead allows great flexibility when visitors are in town or when we are out of town.

I like to mix up my posts even if I’m at the keyboard ~ some short and easy to write. Others more involved. Makes it more interesting for me and for readers.

  7. March 23, 2011 at 11:48 PM

:* (kisses and hugs) I finally took advantage of the fact that I write in spurts and have used the “past-posting and future-posting” scheduling feature. (Same feature, just different days) If one is in arrears, the past post date will publish immediately, and slip into the delegated spot.

I was “40 days” in arrears and have scheduled some advance things, and covering the forty days I’ve missed so far. Its a great feature for those of us that find it difficult to maintain a daily writing regime. 😳

    Good ideas there Rose.
As you may remember, I will be overseas for the whole of September this year and I was wondering what to do about my blog. I opted for the postaweek challenge, so keeping up with my blog won’t be too difficult. I’m hoping I’ll still be able to write one post a week whilst away (depending on internet availability etc.) but I may leave answers to comments until I return home.

Great post ideas, but wouldn’t including an excerpt without permission violate copyright ?

    • March 24, 2011 at 9:07 AM

Good ideas, I like the “gone fishin” one! I think so long as you acknowledge the original source and make it clear it’s an excerpt or quote from another blog the copyright won’t be violeted.

    • March 24, 2011 at 1:44 PM

Many copyright notices permit use of excerpts as long as you give credit to whomever they specify. I’ve noticed on many of the blog sites that their copyright notices fall into this category. Read the copyright notice first to ease your mind.

Elizabeth, you are full of great ideas…I will have to look into this scheduling function. You have to take time to experience life in order to have something to write about. I love PiPs idea of hanging up the “gone fishing” sign as well.

  11. March 24, 2011 at 11:19 PM

Sorry Rose, its late. I forgot where I was for a minute.

  12. March 25, 2011 at 3:29 AM

    hi there Rosemary,

Glad to see you online again.

One of the things I try (note the word “try” ) to do is, when I get the chance, just write a few bits and pieces for days when I may not have time, and set them aside in a folder. Another handy tip is to get folks to make a guest comment, thenyou check them out and save them to put in when you need them.

Bless you girl, your tips are real handy. Take care lass.

I sometimes try to build a backlog of posts in draft so I have something to fall back on if I hit a dry spell. My cartoons can be time consuming so the splitting them into parts is a good idea too. My latest cartoon is going to run over an as yet undetermined number of episodes.

I’ve loved finding new blogs through the postaday2011. I already schedule posts as I travel away from home for work and often can’t get online during those times. I often pop in a ‘thought for the day’. I’ve got one scheduled for next Saturday – and here was the last. http://chittlechattle.wordpress.com/2011/04/16/thought-for-today-2/
