RandomBlog2011 Challenge – Feb 14-20/11

Stay Tuned For Future Plans

Beyond February 20, 2011

The RandomBlog2011 Challenge

I’m encouraging bloggers in the WordPress Challenge to commit to visit and read at least 2 new blogs every day this coming week Feb. 14-20, 2011 at a blog they have never visited before.

I have no idea how many will decide to take part in this challenge but I’ve been thinking about this since I noticed the special week of Feb 14 – 20, 2011 for Random Acts of Kindness and I just had to give it a try.

Anyone wanting to take part in this challenge can tag their posts with RandomBlog2011.  You will be able to find and read the blogs participating in the RandomBlog2011 Challenge using this tag the same way you are currently reading the PostADay2011 and PostAWeek2011 blogs.

I will be adding comments to the Daily Post inviting anyone who wants to take part to tag their posts RandomBlog2011. Each participant is asked to read and comment on 2 random blogs every day for the week but that doesn’t mean you can’t read more. Let’s share some likes and comments with some new bloggers.

If you are wanting to take part in the challenge please make sure that your name and Gravatar are linked to your blog. People can’t read your blog if they can’t find it easily enough. If you’re not sure how to do this, please read Bloggers With No Links.

How many random blogs will you read this week?

The RandomBlog2011 Challenge

1.    Read a minimum of 2 new blog posts every day from any of the tags on WordPress.com at a blog you have never visited before.

2.    Look outside of your comfort zone and read something totally different from what you normally would. Expand your horizon.

3.    Go “Tag Surfing” on the Hot Topics page.

4.    Follow a “comment trail” – start with a comment on a friend’s blog from someone you’ve never met and see how far it takes you.

5.    Try and find new bloggers looking for readers and leave a “like” and a “comment”. Ask them to join in the fun and check out the RandomBlog2011 Challenge.

6.    Tag your own posts with RandomBlog2011.

7.    Feel free to tag a post or two from the past week with RandomBlog2011.

8.    Tag an older post or a favourite that didn’t get the attention it deserved.

9.    Visit the Daily Post and read through the comments and see if you can find someone looking for readers. If they’re posting a link they want to be read.

10.  You can visit any new blog you want but I encourage you to visit and comment on blogs that may have recently joined the WordPress PostADay2011 or PostAWeek 2011 Challenge.

I think that just about covers it.

Seashell suggested the following in her comment Monday and I think it’s a great idea.

We could even help drive a little more traffic to the new bloggers by everyone adding a little footnote in their posts about the new bloggers they’ve visited.

:-) Please share this page to get the word out.  :-)

Okay, I have more than a minute now.

Thanks for subscribing Debbie and for helping to get the word out. I’m hoping we can have some fun with this and help out some of the new bloggers.

I know how much I appreciated seeing the likes and comments when I started my blog. :-)

Rosemary, This week might prove very challenging for you as I know you are in the habit of returning comments–It may help that we group several replies to comments into one, something I’ve seen done on other blogs that have a lot of traffic. Just an idea.

Hi Jaxie, I’ve been having a few challenging weeks, between losing the Internet for a couple of days, feeling sick most of the past week I did manage to get caught up and so far I’m keeping up with the comments.

I’ve thought about what you suggested if I’m going to find a couple of new blogs every day to read. I will just have wait to see how the rest of the week goes. :-)

I think I’ve joined the challenge. Not sure. The name is on my blog roll – but no image yet? not sure how to get that on. Have tried instructions several times in vain!
thanks for all your advice, jenny

Thanks for joining the challenge Jenny. There is no image connected to the challenge, that’s just one I chose to use on my blog. :-)

As usual, I only find out about new things in the blogging world when it’s already (almost) too late. I think it’s a great idea and I’m definately going to participate. I only started blogging last december and would be very grateful for new readers! Very nice of you to help out all the new bloggers in the world!

    • February 16, 2011 at 7:56 AM | #24

Welcome and thanks for subscribing. It’s never too late, just jump right in and start reading some blogs. Make sure you visit the RandomBlog2011 Challenge page.

It was just two months ago today that I started this blog and I’ve found that by visiting and commenting on other blogs it often brings them back to mine.

Thanks for accepting the challenge and have fun this week. :-)

I’ve created 2 badges for the RandomBlog2011 Challenge and popped them on my latest post. The look pretty decent so feel free to use them :)

Thanks so much for doing that. I was hoping someone would help me out and do that. I will mention it in my next post. :-)

    My pleasure! Every little helps!

  16. February 16, 2011 at 5:51 PM | #31

I have been doing a less formal version of this since I began PostAWeek. When I post, I like to watch it go up and then click on some of my ‘neighbours’ and check them out. Some days I read more than others, but it’s fun to get a random slice of life on any given day. It puts life in some kind of perspective.

It’s a great idea to encourage this habit :) Web community. I’m in :D

    • February 16, 2011 at 6:18 PM | #32

Welcome and thanks for subscribing. Everyone seems to be enjoying the challenge and I’ve seen new connections being made between like-minded people. There is quite a diverse group of people that read my blog and among my blogging buddies. There has certainly been a lot of support and encouragement this week. :-)

    Dear WordPress:

Please make this post on the Freshly Pressed.

    Yours sincerely,

This is such a nice idea that it seems like it should be more permanent than a single week – maybe modified a bit, keeping up with the challenge and tags, but set a minimum number of random blogs per week.

    • February 18, 2011 at 12:49 PM | #36

Hi Patti and welcome. I’m happy you like the idea and there has been a good response from the blogging community.

I have thought about it and just need to give it more consideration. :-)

  19. February 18, 2011 at 1:11 PM | #37

I’m on board. May take me a little while to get up and running. Technical stuff is still a challenge. But it’s good for my brain.

    hugs for the great idea!…hugmamma.

    • February 18, 2011 at 1:18 PM | #38

Hi and thanks Hugmamma. Technical stuff can still be a challenge for me too! I try to work around it and look for another solution.

Loved the interview you did with MyEnglishThought, she has such enthusiasm and has been an awesome blogging buddy! :-)

  20. February 19, 2011 at 7:12 PM | #39

Great idea. (I guess you count as a Random Blog for me since I’ve never been to your blog before). I’m going back and updating my tags for today’s & yestereday’s posts.

    • February 19, 2011 at 7:18 PM | #40

Hi and welcome Freedom. Glad you like the idea and yes I count, the funny thing is you’re the first one to mention it.

You can select older posts too! :-)

Great I idea, I started doing this late last week & have already come across some great bogs that I’ve never read before. My RSS list is growing..

    • February 21, 2011 at 2:46 PM | #42

Hi Tony, that’s what I’m hearing from everyone.

It’s going to be a little different moving forward but should still be pretty good if not better for everyone. :-)

  22. February 21, 2011 at 8:57 PM | #43

I liked this idea. Actually I was blog surfing all along but never really felt comfortable to comment. But, but since your post is about commenting unrandomly randomly kinda sorta, I thought I’d participate and comment. After all my commenting was done, I think WordPress needs Spell check for the comment section. May just be me, but it would be a nice addition. I am giving the Randomblog2011 a thumbs up.

    • February 22, 2011 at 7:57 AM | #44

I, too, have always tag surfed. Before I started blooging last month–I never followed any blogs so I had to start somewhere. My blogroll –with one exception, a friend’s blog–and subscribers all originiated with tag surfing & commenting.(either me or them).

  23. February 27, 2011 at 4:33 PM | #45

Sounds like fun! I love stumbling across something fab online.

Welcome Jamie, It is fun and from your blog it seems like you’re pretty adventurous. Jump on board and join us.

We’re discovering new blogs and giving the bloggers some support and encouragement. It makes a difference. :-)

    This is a great idea.
I have been blog-surfing for months and have met great bloggers along the way. I will definitely join this challenge and put the button in my blog :)

    Hello ClassyRos

I just found out your blog today. It’s very kind of you to give a chance for a new blogger to get a little more traffic.

Traffic is not everything, but it’s a great motivation, especially if people like what you wrote and comment it. Thank you. I’m in.
