Too Many Things Today – Prevent Content Theft

I don’t know where to start today because there are just too many things bugging me. This is what’s bugging me today!

Now, I normally tell you what’s bugging me and why and then try to offer my solution. Today I’m not sure what the solution is and I don’t want to go into details now. But I do suggest that you read the following and take the necessary steps to protect the content on your blogs if you haven’t already done so.

Instead of just giving you the link to the page at WordPress.com, I’ve chosen to include it in my post because I know that many won’t click-through but if it’s here you will at least give the list a scan.

Let’s just say this is part of what’s bugging me today and why I have finally added my copyright to the blog and Copyscape.

I’m suggesting that you think about this and consider doing the same.

Prevent Content Theft

, ,

There are several steps that you can take in order to prevent your material from being used in an unauthorized manner. Keep in mind, however, that there is no way to fully guarantee the complete protection of your work (after all, this is the internet).

If your content is found to be stolen, please review the necessary steps to file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice:

1) Include a very clear copyright notice on your blog. In this, be sure to specify what you will allow and will NOT allow. Here is an example of a valid copyright notice that may be placed on your blog:

© [Full Name] and [Blog Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Blog Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.

Place the copyright notice in your sidebar so that it may be visible at all times; this can be accomplished using a text widget from Appearance -> Widgets in the menu. Moreover, be sure to include a copyright note in each and every one of your blog posts (either at the beginning or end of the article).

Your wording of the copyright notice should differ, depending on the type of blog you currently maintain. The aforementioned example notice is most appropriate for your standard blog. If you have a photo blog (or blog that is highly focused on some sort of document type), you may want to modify the language accordingly.

2) Obtain an appropriate Creative Commons License, according to how much you are willing to share. You can, similar to the first option mentioned above, designate precisely what you will and will not allow regarding your personal work and obtain an official license according to these guidelines. Free licenses may be obtained here. Even if you decide to obtain and use a Creative Commons License, it is recommended that you still include a copyright notice, as illustrated in the first point within this article.

3) Configure your RSS feed so that it displays post summaries. This will add an extra layer of protection against scrapers using RSS feeds to illegally obtain their content. You can set this option from the Reading Settings.

4) Search for your content using Google. This is fairly easy to do; simply take chunks of your blog posts, and search for the identical contents on Google and/or other search engines (enclosing the contents in quotations helps). Otherwise, you may never know if your content is being stolen or scraped; bloggers are not always aware of unauthorized use that is taking place. If you do, in fact, discover that your content is being stolen, you may take the necessary steps to file a formal DMCA notice.

5) Set up a Google Alert to scan for your name or blog name/title. You can set up a custom Google Alert here – http://www.google.com/alerts. Note that you do need a Google account.

6) Use Copyscape. You can use the service’s search feature to check for unauthorized copies of your pages and even include a free banner on your blog. There are also even paid services, including automatic web monitoring.

7) Protect your images and other documents, as well. Although you are not able to completely prevent the copying of your images and documents, it is highly recommended that you place a watermark on them in or order to thwart any unauthorized use. Normally, this can be accomplished within the files’ respective editing programs (Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.). Run some Google searches or check out the documentation of your particular software package for more information on this. There are also several third-party applications that allow you to add watermarks to images.

8) Get some more information and even report sites over at http://stolen.wordpress.com

This is what’s bugging me today!!

Wow Rose, this is an excellent post!!

I’ve been approached by a couple of websites recently asking my permission to use some of the content from my blog; how many unscrupulous websites don’t? I will certainly be adding a copyright symbol to my photos in future and making regular checks 🙂

    Cheers
    PiP

    • February 22, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Thanks PiP, something I had been meaning to do and was always putting off to the side.

Finally realized that it need to be taken care of and it really didn’t take too long but there is still more to do. 🙂

  2. February 22, 2011 at 11:48 AM

Thank you for this Rose, I posted a link to this on my site…good information. You have probably just helped many people, that should make you smile my friend!!

    • February 22, 2011 at 1:49 PM

Thanks Princess, I appreciate you posting a link.

It does put a smile on my face. Thanks again. 🙂

  3. February 22, 2011 at 12:24 PM

Thank you for such great information! I’ll be starting on this immediately.

    • February 22, 2011 at 2:02 PM

You’re welcome Shell, the copyright example from WordPress works fine for most bloggers and everyone should have it on their blog.

If people feel they need to write their own, they can then take some time doing it. 🙂

  4. February 22, 2011 at 12:31 PM

grrrr Rose. thanks for helping us all out this way though.
A pox on all the thieves, i say!

    • February 22, 2011 at 2:05 PM

You’re welcome Joss, and my sentiments exactly. 🙂

  5. February 22, 2011 at 12:32 PM

so kind of you. tried to do this. half worked. bit complex for me. can’t decide how dire consequences might be – to make perseverance essential?

    • February 22, 2011 at 2:08 PM

Hi Jenny, if you don’t want your work stolen it’s a good idea to have it on your blog. The instructions for adding the copyright notice are pretty straight forward. 🙂

  6. February 22, 2011 at 1:36 PM

Thanks for the information. Once, I couldn’t easily find an article I had written on Gather and a blog I started before my current one, so I just googled to avoid flipping through different pages. On this particular story I wrote I actually had my full name under it, plus it had been published in a couple of newspapers. But I found that story copied and my name changed to someone else’s. I complained to google as whoever did this was using it to get advertising hits on this particular site. It took awhile, but it was taken down from that site.

    • February 22, 2011 at 2:14 PM

You’re welcome. You’re lucky that Google took care of it for you, others aren’t. 🙂

  7. February 22, 2011 at 1:42 PM

I’ve been meaning to do this for sometime now but haven’t. After reading this post I went and did it. Thanks for sharing.

    • February 22, 2011 at 2:52 PM

Hi Soapbird, I just checked your blog and I like the way you’ve set it up as a separate page but you still need to make sure it appears on every page and the side-bar is the best place for it.

You may have missed this but WordPress also suggests the following,

Moreover, be sure to include a copyright note in each and every one of your blog posts (either at the beginning or end of the article).

It’s going to take some time doing this step but it’s well worth it to protect all your content. 🙂

  8. February 22, 2011 at 2:08 PM

Thanks for the tips, I will consider your advice. I’m not too sure what value I’ve placed on my posts yet to warrant a copyright notice, my ‘serious’ writing is on a different site. I blog just for fun and am not sure if I’d be honoured if someone tried to pass my work off as their own, or annoyed about it.
But as ever Rose, very very helpful and worth taking on board for the more serious writers amongst us.

    • February 22, 2011 at 3:00 PM

Hi Marcia, I would definitely be annoyed that someone chose to steal from me. But in the end each person has to make their own decision on what’s right for them. 🙂

I really appreciate this information for consideration. I have to admit, though, I don’t think there’s anything on my blog that really warrants using a copyright. O.o I guess I’ll need to give it more thought.

I hope whatever situation inspired this post is swiftly remedied in your favor!

    • February 22, 2011 at 9:17 PM

Yes, maybe you should give it some more thought. You may not have anything now but you could in the future and wouldn’t it be nice to have it all in place already. 🙂

  10. February 22, 2011 at 7:10 PM

Thanks for sharing this with us. I”m crunched for time at the moment, but I’ll certainly be coming back to your page so that I can include it on my blog eventually. (I figure these first few are rough enough that I’m not at too much risk)

    • February 22, 2011 at 9:22 PM

Hi Sondra, that’s fine but you should take care of it unless you’re not worried about other people using your photos. In the end it’s your decision but it would be nice if people used your photos that you were given the proper credit. 🙂

  11. February 22, 2011 at 9:23 PM

This is brilliant information Rose, and I have taken the steps you put forward. I still have to copywrite my photographs though, and will do that asap.
    Thank you so much!

    • February 22, 2011 at 9:41 PM

You’re welcome Barb, I just took a look a your blog and it looks good. There are plenty of blogs with photos and they should really be protected.

Have you visited Texas Tweeties? He does a great job with the copyright on his photos. 🙂

  12. February 23, 2011 at 12:19 AM

    Thanks, Rose

  13. February 23, 2011 at 7:20 AM

Wow not something i’d ever thought of good shout

    • February 23, 2011 at 8:15 AM

Hi Timmer, there are plenty who don’t think about it until it’s too late. Best to get started early. 🙂

  14. February 23, 2011 at 8:54 AM

Thank you and I express my sympathy for you, Rose.

  15. February 23, 2011 at 10:49 AM

Very interesting post, it certainly got my attention as I’ve not given the subject of copyright much thought for years. I written a posted an article on my blog about copyright and added a few links to copyright references.

Thanks Noobcake, I just took a quick look and it looks interesting.

I’m going back to finish reading it. 🙂

  16. February 23, 2011 at 3:04 PM

Thanks for this advice Rose. I came across a site the other day from a trackback that had copied a number of my posts. I left a comment asking why they did this but no response. They did have a postscript with my url stating that is where it is from but I still don’t understand why they need to do this. GRRRRR!!!!

    • February 23, 2011 at 4:37 PM

You’re welcome Tony. Who knows why people do the things they do. Maybe they didn’t know not to or just didn’t care. At least they gave you credit for it and didn’t claim it as their own. 🙂

Real good information. I will follow all advice. Am I still able to watermark artwork if it has already been published in the blog?

    • February 27, 2011 at 12:35 AM

I’m not sure, but I think you will have to watermark and upload them again. 🙂
