How To Deal With Blogs and Vacations

March 23, 2011 42 comments

Spring officially arrives today at 7:21 p.m. EDT 032011Spring has arrived with people starting to think about planning summer vacations. But this year, some may feel they have a problem because they’ve committed to post to their blogs every day and aren’t sure how they’re going to keep up with it. I’m having a tough time right now just keeping up. This is what’s bugging me today!

Before even summer vacations come around, we have long weekends to deal with. April brings us a long weekend with Good Friday and Easter, in the month of May, we have Victoria Day for the Canadians and Memorial Day for the Americans and I’m sure there are others happening around the globe.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about your blog during these times. What happens if something unexpected comes up and you’re called out-of-town? Wouldn’t it be nice if you had some posts already lined up and ready to publish.

I know I would love not having to worry about my blog during times like that.

We know we can use the scheduling feature to post into the future but first we have to write them. So what do you write about.

Here are some ideas that I’ve offered to others before:

  1. If you love reading, write a short book review, include an excerpt from the book.
  2. If it’s poetry you love, let people know why in a few sentences and include the poem.
  3. Is there a favourite quotation/s that you like. You can do the same here as you did with the poem or book.
  4. Use the WordPress Press this‘ feature and reblog someone else’s post.
  5. Check your ‘Posts I Like‘ and see if there are any you would like to reblog. The feature is right on the page.
  6. Post some photos and tell a story.
  7. Write about your favourite food and maybe post a recipe.
  8. Write shorter posts – make your blog post a 2 or 3-parter.

Which is what I’m doing today! Because if I continue it’s going to be too long. Part 2 with more ideas tomorrow.

The ideas I mentioned above are great to have on hand, ready to publish for those days when you just can’t come up with something or are pressed for time.

What are your plans for the summer?

Will you be taking your blog on vacation with you or will you put up a “Gone Fishing” post?

This is what’s bugging me today!

Trying To Keep Up

March 22, 2011 22 comments

Things in life I find annoyingI try not to be too negative in my writings but I’m having trouble keeping up. This is what’s bugging me today!

Today I want to quote 2 sentences from “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” by Richard Carlson.

#2 Make Peace with Imperfection

I’ve yet to meet an absolute perfectionist whose life was filled with inner peace.

As you begin to eliminate your need for perfection in all areas of your life, you’ll begin to discover the perfection in life itself.

Now I’m not sure that I can stop trying to be a perfectionist completely, but I have to accept that sometimes just doing the best that I can is good enough.

This is what’s bugging me today!

Links Not Opening In New Windows

March 21, 2011 37 comments

This is just one of those little things I find annoying. This is what’s bugging me today!

There are many people who don’t like links opening in new windows but I’m not one of them. When I’m reading a blog/website and click on an external link I like having it open in a new window and keeping the original blog/website open so I can easily go back to it.

If I don’t find the link interesting, I just close down the window and I still have the original blog/website to continue reading.

A good reason to have external links open in new windows is to keep your visitor on your blog as long as possible. Because if your visitor finds the link you’ve provided very interesting he/she may never make it back to your blog.

This is how I like to handle links on my blog.

  • External links – open in new window
  • Internal blog links – open in same window

The default when you choose to add any hyperlink is to open in the same window.

WordPress offers us the option of linking to other sites through Zemanta and the “Recommended Links“, the major one being Wikipedia. Even though the default is to open in the same window, you can change this by editing the hyperlink and clicking on the “Open link in a new window/tab”.

If it’s photos you’re adding from Wikipedia or another site you have to go to the Advanced Settings tab and scroll down to check the box to have the link open in a new window.

By doing this, you now keep your visitor on your blog and the other site opens in a new window. I find this especially important if you list other sites in the “Related Articles“. This gives your visitor a chance to read any comments and hopefully add their own comment to your blog.

How about you? Do you like links opening in new windows?

This is what’s bugging me today!

Being In A Slump

March 17, 2011 44 comments

Classyrose, Things in life I find annoying, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011, Randomblog2011, challengeI’m in a writing slump. This is what’s bugging me today!

There are so many things I start writing about but I just can’t seem to finish them. Just don’t seem motivated to write the last few days. It doesn’t help that I haven’t been feeling too good either.

Is it just that I’m tired of winter?

Instead of the February blahs, I’m experiencing the dreariness of March.

Is it the change in weather? Where I’m teased one day into thinking spring is almost here only to get a blast of cold air the next day and realize that it’s still winter. It was warmer out today but there was a cold wind blowing.

I want to throw off the winter coat, hat, scarf. I want to sit outside and bask in the sunshine.

I want to see flowers poking up out of the ground, buds on the trees, the splashes of bright yellow from the forsythia bushes.

Do you get into writing slumps?

How do you get out of them?

I’m tired of winter.

This is what’s bugging me today!

Not Knowing How To Add Follow Me on Twitter

March 14, 2011 18 comments

Twitter, ClassyRose101, Things in life I find annoyingI’ve written a couple of posts over the past week about Twitter. WordPress bloggers are now putting their Twitter feed on their blogs but it seems that not all WordPress themes come with an option or Widget to add the Follow Me on Twitter Badge to their blog. This is what’s bugging me today!

I knew there had to be a way to add it so I went searching on Twitter and found the solution for you to use.

The first thing you need to do is head over to Twitter’s Resources/buttons page where you will find different buttons in various sizes and colours to choose from.

Click on the button you want to display and a small pop-up window will appear with the HTML code that includes your Twitter username. You must be signed in to Twitter for this to work.

FollowMeOnTwitter, ClassyRose101, RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011,PostAWeek2011, Things in life I find annoying

Copy the code in the pop-up window.

<img src=”http://twitter-badges.s3.amazonaws.com/follow_me-b.png” alt=”Follow classyrose101 on Twitter”/>

The next step is to go to:

Dashboard – Appearance – Widgets – Text

  • Add a text box to your sidebar.
  • Paste the HTML code into the text box.

Depending on which button you choose to use you might want to add a title to your widget. The button I selected for this example doesn’t really need one so I’ve left it blank.

TwitterTextWidget, RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011, ClassyRose, Things in life I find annoying

Select the position where you would like your Follow Me On Twitter button to appear and click on “Save Widget“.

Visit your blog, make sure you’ve hit refresh and your badge should appear and look like this.

Click on it to make sure it’s working properly and you’re done. Your readers now have an easy way to follow you on Twitter.

I’ve already given these instructions to my blogging buddy PiP and she has successfully added the button to her blog Piglet in Portugal if you would like to see how it looks.

Do you have a Follow Me On Twitter button on your blog!

Now that I’ve shown you how to add the Follow Me On Twitter button to your blog,

There is nothing bugging me today!

Housekeeping – Good Reason To Add Twitter To Your Blog

March 12, 2011 32 comments

Blog, Housekeeping, annoying, bugging me, blogging, chores, pet peevesEarthquakes, tsunamis, radiation leaks. This is what’s bugging me today!

This week’s earthquake in Japan has shown us how valuable Twitter can be and is to those caught in such a tragedy. One of my blogging buddies, Cocomino couldn’t get home from Tokyo to his family in Kawagoe because rail transportation was shut down.

He managed to do one quick post before he lost access to the internet – I can’t go home.

After that post, there was limited means of communication until he realized:

I could access the twitter or the other news site on the internet by my iphone.
I found my family’s safe on my blog’s comment!

Using Twitter he was able to learn about his family and to keep family and friends updated.

Twitter @cocomino3

Summerfield84 is another Japanese blogger also writing on an English blog. He doesn’t have the Twitter widget on his blog and I wasn’t even sure if he had a Twitter account. There was no word from him and I was concerned for his safety until he published a post today. He’s okay! I’ve since learned he does have a Twitter account.

I was relieved to hear that both of them are safe and are happily blogging again and letting us know through their blogs what it’s like now in Japan.

Cocomino’s latest blog post – I could come back home an hour ago. We are all OK. but….

Summerfield84’s latest blog post – The majr catastrophe : The Great East Japan Earthquake

Do you have the Twitter widget in your sidebar?

It’s easy to add, Dashboard – Appearance – Widgets – Twitter

Select the number of entries you would like to show – from 1 – 20
Hide replies –  using @username at the beginning of the tweet.
Include retweets – yes or no
Text to display between tweet and timestamp – eg. Tweeted

@classyrose101, Twitter

Some other info
You can use multiple Twitter widgets on the same blog.
Retweets using the official retweet button do not appear.

Check out WordPress Support for complete instructions on how to add the Twitter Widget.

Here is another link that you might find useful  – Guide to Preparing for a Disaster.

The theme for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is “Home“. Think of all the people who have lost their lives in the earthquake and subsequent Tsunami. Think of those who did manage to survive but now find that their home was destroyed.  Think of those being evacuated from their homes because of the radiation leak. How will they manage over the coming days, weeks, months?

Countries around the world are offering whatever help Japan needs to recover from this horrific tragedy. You can help by making a charitable donation to any one of many organizations who are rushing to help Japan and its citizens.

If you’re worried about being scammed, check out the article at CNN Money on reputable charities to give to.

This is what’s bugging me today!

A Fat Tax! – It Won’t Work

March 10, 2011 23 comments
Things in life I find annoying, RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011

Image via Wikipedia

Often I’m the one inspiring Noobcake for his next post but this time he’s inspired me to write about the “fat tax“. This is what’s bugging me today!

For those who don’t know me, I’m skinny, extremely skinny, and when they start talking about adding a fat tax to high-calorie foods and soft drinks I just want to scream.

I don’t mean to offend anyone, but why do I have to pay more for my food because the obese and overweight people can’t control the quantity and quality of food they eat!

  • It’s not one chocolate bar with 200 calories that makes you fat, it’s how many of them you eat in a day, week, or month.
  • How many soft drinks are you drinking daily?
  • How many times per week are you picking up fast food?

Every time I go to the grocery store I find there is another product I’m used to purchasing that is now lower in fat, calorie, sugar, salt.  A jar of jam now has 50% less calories but I’m paying the same price and would have to use twice as much to get the same amount of calories as I did before.

I need all that so-called “unhealthy” stuff just to maintain my weight, never mind trying to gain some. And so does anybody else who suffers with Crohn’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Cancer and other ailments where maintaining and gaining weight is difficult.

Don’t we have enough problems to deal with already without having to find the extra money needed just to pay for the calories we need.

Now the government wants me to pay more for my food because the fat people can’t control what they eat and they don’t know how to eat healthy.

Why make the unhealthy people who are already having a hard time pay a fat tax?

Dietitians I’ve seen in the past have told me to go ahead and have those french fries with gravy if it doesn’t irritate my Crohn’s Disease. They’ve told me to eat all the foods that any one who is trying to lose weight is told to avoid. That means the high-calorie foods and soft drinks that the government now wants to tax.

It’s not the food that leads to obesity. It’s the quantity of the food that leads to obesity.

It’s consistently exceeding your daily calorie requirements that leads to obesity.

Social Question

Why shouldn’t there be a “Fat Tax” for the overweight?

Let us eat cake, without the fat tax

Just like I’m skinny and have a hard time gaining weight, I know there are some who are overweight who have medical problems and have difficulty losing weight. That’s not who I’m talking about. I’m talking about the ones who can do something about if they really wanted to.

What do you think?  –  Will a fat tax work?

This is what’s bugging me today!
