or not – 10,000 Blog Hits, Thank You Readers

March 10, 2011 38 comments

10,000 Hits Oh What A Feeling!, Things in life I find annoying, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011I’ve reached 10,000 hits! Oh what a feeling! There is nothing bugging me today!

To be celebrating 10,000 hits and having Piglet in Portugal publish her interview of me on the same day is awesome!

First things first. A special thank you to my friend and first blogging buddy Piglet in Portugal for helping to make this day possible for me. She has been a rock to me. I’ve gone through some trying times over the past month and without her I’m not sure if I would have made it to today.

It was a wonderful experience having her interview me. If you came directly here and haven’t read the Interview with “blogging buddy” ClassyRose yet you might want to head over there and read it before continuing here. I’m not going anywhere.

This is my day to glow. There is nothing bugging me today!

10000 Hits, RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011, Challenge, WordPressWow! What a feeling!

Here is a taste of the interview.

From Piglet in Portugal – Interview with “blogging buddy” ClassyRose

When WordPress started the PostADay/PostAWeek Challenge in January and subsequently made a post about “blogging buddies”, I left a comment and ClassyRose came to my rescue. Rose is great, always offering words of encouragement and support both through the good times and bad. ClassyRose also helps and encourages so many bloggers through her blog “Things in life I find annoying” – I thought it would be great to interview Rose and she kindly agreed.

ClassyRose please tell us a little something about you as a person.

PiP, you know how much I don’t like having to write about myself but I guess it is something that needs to be done. I’ll give you a little more than the usual two-minute elevator speech.

I come from a family of 8 children. My parents emigrated from Italy with 5 children and the last three were born in Toronto. I’m number 7 of the 8. When I was 18 I decided I didn’t want to live by my father’s rules… Click here to continue reading the interview.

Thanks PiP

Now it’s time to thank you the readers and my blogging buddies who have been here for me with your kind words of support and encouragement. Without you this never could have happened today.

I know that since I launched the RandomBlog2011 Challenge in February I haven’t been reading and commenting on my buddies blogs on a daily basis but it’s been kind of hectic for me. I’m trying to deal with not only the success of the Challenge but the success of my blog.

I would also like to thank Scott Berkun and The Daily Post at WordPress.com for featuring one of my posts, because the same day it appeared on The Daily Post I had already reached 5000 hits and the following day was my best ever receiving over 500 hits.

I wasn’t paying much attention to the number of comments I had until I read another blog where they were celebrating receiving their 1000th comment. I looked at mine and realized I was only a few comments away. That was February 12th and the milestones just haven’t stopped.

Comments, best day surpassed by another best day, 5000 hits, featured on The Daily Post.

Then this week I hit 2000 comments and I also hit the Like button for the 1000th  time. Oh, did I mention that my blog is barely 3 months old.

Things in life I find annoying, PostADay2011, RandomBlog2011, PostAWeek2011Now you know why I keep saying I’m on a roller coaster ride and I don’t know what’s going to happen next. I’m loving it all and it’s been hard trying to hold all this excitement and not sharing it with you my readers who have made it all possible. I will never forget that it is you who helped me reach this special milestone I’m celebrating today.

Thank you. 😳

There is absolutely nothing bugging me today!

Too Many Things Today – Prevent Content Theft

February 22, 2011 43 comments

I don’t know where to start today because there are just too many things bugging me. This is what’s bugging me today!

Now, I normally tell you what’s bugging me and why and then try to offer my solution. Today I’m not sure what the solution is and I don’t want to go into details now. But I do suggest that you read the following and take the necessary steps to protect the content on your blogs if you haven’t already done so.

Instead of just giving you the link to the page at WordPress.com, I’ve chosen to include it in my post because I know that many won’t click-through but if it’s here you will at least give the list a scan.

Let’s just say this is part of what’s bugging me today and why I have finally added my copyright to the blog and Copyscape.

I’m suggesting that you think about this and consider doing the same.

TOS & Copyright

Prevent Content Theft

, ,

There are several steps that you can take in order to prevent your material from being used in an unauthorized manner. Keep in mind, however, that there is no way to fully guarantee the complete protection of your work (after all, this is the internet).

If your content is found to be stolen, please review the necessary steps to file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice:

1) Include a very clear copyright notice on your blog. In this, be sure to specify what you will allow and will NOT allow. Here is an example of a valid copyright notice that may be placed on your blog:

© [Full Name] and [Blog Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Blog Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.

Place the copyright notice in your sidebar so that it may be visible at all times; this can be accomplished using a text widget from Appearance -> Widgets in the menu. Moreover, be sure to include a copyright note in each and every one of your blog posts (either at the beginning or end of the article).

Your wording of the copyright notice should differ, depending on the type of blog you currently maintain. The aforementioned example notice is most appropriate for your standard blog. If you have a photo blog (or blog that is highly focused on some sort of document type), you may want to modify the language accordingly.

2) Obtain an appropriate Creative Commons License, according to how much you are willing to share. You can, similar to the first option mentioned above, designate precisely what you will and will not allow regarding your personal work and obtain an official license according to these guidelines. Free licenses may be obtained here. Even if you decide to obtain and use a Creative Commons License, it is recommended that you still include a copyright notice, as illustrated in the first point within this article.

3) Configure your RSS feed so that it displays post summaries. This will add an extra layer of protection against scrapers using RSS feeds to illegally obtain their content. You can set this option from the Reading Settings.

4) Search for your content using Google. This is fairly easy to do; simply take chunks of your blog posts, and search for the identical contents on Google and/or other search engines (enclosing the contents in quotations helps). Otherwise, you may never know if your content is being stolen or scraped; bloggers are not always aware of unauthorized use that is taking place. If you do, in fact, discover that your content is being stolen, you may take the necessary steps to file a formal DMCA notice.

5) Set up a Google Alert to scan for your name or blog name/title. You can set up a custom Google Alert here – http://www.google.com/alerts. Note that you do need a Google account.

6) Use Copyscape. You can use the service’s search feature to check for unauthorized copies of your pages and even include a free banner on your blog. There are also even paid services, including automatic web monitoring.

7) Protect your images and other documents, as well. Although you are not able to completely prevent the copying of your images and documents, it is highly recommended that you place a watermark on them in or order to thwart any unauthorized use. Normally, this can be accomplished within the files’ respective editing programs (Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.). Run some Google searches or check out the documentation of your particular software package for more information on this. There are also several third-party applications that allow you to add watermarks to images.

8) Get some more information and even report sites over at http://stolen.wordpress.com

This is what’s bugging me today!!

Trying real hard to keep the smile on my face.

or not – RandomBlog2011 Challenge Day 4

February 17, 2011 21 comments

RandomBlog2011 Challenge, postaday2011, postaweek2011There really isn’t a lot to talk about today but then I’m learning to expect the unexpected. There is nothing bugging me today!

From the comments I’m reading, both here on my blog and the blogs I visit and read, it sounds like everyone is having a great time with the RandomBlog2011 Challenge and discovering new blogs and meeting new bloggers. I know I am!

For anyone who needs instructions on how to add an image to your blog check out Noobcake‘s latest post – How to add an image widget to your side bar? He’s gone into a fair amount of detail but it’s easy to follow. You can find the badges at Random Blog Reading.

MK Mercurio left the following comment the other day on The Daily Post on how he discovers new blogs to read.

One other thing I really like about the Daily Topics — I like reading others comments then tracking back and reading their blogs. I try to read at least 5 blogs daily and comment on their posts as a way to connect with these amazing people! I secretly hope they connect with me via comments too but that’s secondary.

Since we’re at the halfway mark this week I thought I would add a poll today.

It looks like the links in my post the other day for the ‘Blogs I’ve Visited’ were pointing to the wrong blogs. So I’m listing them again along with the latest ones. I would like to thank PrimaryThoughts for bringing it to my attention.

or not – Update on RandomBlog2011 Challenge

February 14, 2011 33 comments
randomblog2011, challenge, random acts of kindness, smiles,

I know you're there somewhere!

The response I’ve had to the RandomBlog2011 Challenge has been fantastic. There is nothing bugging me today! 🙂

When I first thought of the RandomBlog2011 Challenge I wasn’t sure if I could make it work but I decided I would never know if I didn’t at least try. With the ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ I’m receiving I’m glad I decided to try and I’m looking forward to the rest of the week.

The challenge is open to everyone and not just new bloggers. The challenge is to show some love to new bloggers by seeking them out and reading their blogs.

What is a new blogger?

Please use your own judgement but I would consider any blog that is less than 1-year old as new.

How do you find the new blogs?

There is no easy way to find them. Some of the things I look for:

  • I check their Archives to see how far back they go.
  • Read their About page.
  • A lot of them usually end up writing a post on trying to get people to read their blogs.
  • Limited content on the blog.

I tend to spot them fairly quickly by the blog’s appearance. Once you know what you’re looking for it’s not that difficult. 🙂

How do you find them? Do you have any tips to share?

I have a feeling that following a “comment trail” is going to prove to be quite popular and we could all be visiting the same blogs. Can I suggest that if you choose to do this that you’re careful about doing it on blogs that already have plenty of comments.

Don’t forget, when you leave comments ask them to join the RandomBlog2011 Challenge. It might encourage them to check it out, join in the fun and get more visitors to their own blog.

Thank you to every one of my readers who are spreading the word through their own blog postings, Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon and other social media platforms.

Don’t forget to tag your posts – RandomBlog2011

There is nothing bugging me today!

Having To Write About Me

January 26, 2011 20 comments

Things in life I find annoyingI was determined to write my new About Me page and I can tell you that I struggled with it. I don’t like having to write about myself. This is what’s bugging me today!

Get me in a conversation and I can tell you all sorts of stories about me and my life. But to have to sit down and write about me in a few paragraphs I found difficult and I’m not scared to admit it. I thought I had it all done and then sat down to check it against the outline and I wasn’t happy with it. So then I started doing edits and just made a real mess of it. I decided to take a break from it and start writing this post. I still need to get back to it and see if I can make some sense of the mess I made.

I know I will get it done, because there are so many of you wanting to read it now! So I better make it good huh!

There’s a good time-lapse that happens here!!

Things in life I find annoying - About Me

After much deliberation, I finally finished my new About Me page. I tell you, that really was a chore for me but boy does it feel good now that it’s done. At least for now. I’m sure there will be some tweaking as I go along.

One less blog housekeeping chore to do.

Seeing as I’ve given you something else to read today, that’s it for this post.

Now I can say that there is nothing bugging me today!

Unfinished Housekeeping Chores

January 25, 2011 14 comments

Things in life I find annoyingIt’s Tuesday morning and I can say that I managed to stay awake most of yesterday and get some sleep last night. But I still have so much of my weekend Housekeeping to do. It’s a short post and this is what’s bugging me today!

I still need to update my about page, but I’m still not quite sure how much I want to write. So I went to my Google Reader to see what I could find. I came up with a great post from Christopher at CreativeBlogger on How to Create Your About Page.

Here are some of the highlights from the post.

  • Start With An Introduction
  • Add A Profile Picture
  • Build The Reader’s Expectations
  • Recommended Reading
  • Invite Your Reader To Connect

Let’s see how many of the points I manage to cover. I’m determined to finish it today and press the publish button when I’m done. I’ve done enough procrastinating on this.

This is what’s bugging me today!

Housekeeping ‘IS’ a Chore

January 22, 2011 25 comments

Housekeeping is a choreIt’s Saturday, which means it’s time for some blog housekeeping again. This is what’s bugging me today!

Last weekend was busy for me, as I decided to change my theme and there is still some work to do. I’ve seen a lot of updated blogs this week, with new pages, new themes and many of you have also updated your about pages and written a post on it. It’s a great way for us to get to know you.

I still haven’t done mine. Oh, I did a little update to it saying I would add more but just can’t seem to sit down and write about myself and put myself out there. It’s easy to do here on the blog because I’m usually telling a story about what is or isn’t bugging me and it serves a purpose. But I know I need to do it and give you a little more about myself.

I’m making a commitment to update my about page over the next few days, as long as I can hit the publish button when I’m done.

How many of you are in the same position as me?

It’s nice to see everyone is displaying the PostADay2011 & PostAWeek2011 badges proudly on their blogs. Did it feel good putting it there? I know it did for me. 🙂

Here are some of my housekeeping chores for the weekend.

  • cleaning up my tags and settle on the main ones to use
  • review my Categories
  • review the blog and add links to other postings

The last one could take a bit of time, but it’s easier to do it now before the job gets so huge that I won’t want to do it. Why is this important? Linking to past articles and other pages on your blog increases your page views and keeps the reader on your blog.

This also helps to Improve Your Search Rankings and receive more visitors to your blog. Listing related articles at the bottom of your post is a great way to do it, but you can also link to other posts/pages within your posts by marking a word or phrase in bold and linking to it.

I have my work cut out for me this weekend.

This is what’s bugging me today!
