My 5 of the 20 Most Annoying Things at the Grocery Store

March 4, 2011 36 comments

Things in life I find annoying, RandomBlog2011 Challenge, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011Where do grocery store cashiers learn to bag groceries these days? This is what’s bugging me today!

When I do my grocery shopping I usually try to pack my own groceries because I don’t like the way they do it. The last time I handed over my bags and let her pack them and I asked her to please distribute the weight evenly.

This one was totally useless. Not only didn’t she do that but she was about to put my bananas at the bottom of a bag. If I hadn’t seen that, the grapes would have ended up at the bottom too!

I ended up having to repack my groceries. That’s the last time I let them pack and if I’m in their way of dealing with the next customer, I’m sorry but I like my bananas with no bruises and I don’t like my grapes squished.

I wondered if anyone else is annoyed by these things and I found this list.

There are some good ones on this list. Some are self-explanatory, others I’ve added my description to them and on some I’ve listed theirs.

20 Most Annoying Things at the Grocery Store

1. Gargantuan Grocery Carts

2. Oops! I Forgot One Thing …

3. Prolonged Temper Tantrums – not just children but adults too!

4. Aisle Blockers

5. Express Lane Abuse

This isn’t the “I-am-not-sure-if-I-have-10-or-11-items” cart, it’s the “I-am-feeding-a-family-of-seven-and-we-eat-a-lot” cart.

6. Kids on Wheels

7. Payment Procrastinator

Have your checkbook out and your check pre-filled, so that when you get the final total that’s all you need to pop in! (Same goes for debit cards, credit cards, cash or any other type of payment — you shouldn’t be digging through your purse for it at the last minute!)

8. Let’s Put Back the … – not having enough money to pay for everything

9. Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign – yes, but what’s on sale?

10. The ’10-for-$10′ Trick – enticing you to buy more than you need

11. That’s Gotta Sting – expired, damaged or opened goods not  noticed until you get home

12. Poor Cart Choices – bum wheels, incessant squeaking or some mystery substance smeared all over it

13. Non-Private PIN Pads

14. Lots of (Closed) Lanes

My Favourite and receives a Gold Star

15. Rough Cashiers

We can’t stand cashiers who take no notice that they are denting cans and squishing bread as they slam our items around. Hey, don’t take your frustrations out on our eggs!

16. But, It Is On Sale! – scanned with the wrong price

17. Checkout Belt Hogs – refusing to move up so you can put your groceries on the belt

18. Self-Checkout Lanes – item won’t scan and you need a cashier, so much for self-checkout and a quick exit

19. Where the Heck Is It?! –  items in sections where it makes no sense or finding they’ve moved your favourite item

20. Frosty Freezers –people who leave the doors open while they decide and the doors get all fogged up

Do any of these annoy you?

Which ones would you pick?

This is what’s bugging me today!

15 Pet Peeves

pet peeves, annoying, what's bugging me,

Sometimes you’re not quite sure what to write about, just too busy with other things, run out of time or haven’t been feeling too well and not felt much like writing. This is what’s bugging me today!

Well this was one of those days for me and I had this post ready for such an occasion. It was nice to know that I had this sitting in my drafts.

Pet Peeves of Mine

1. Standing in line behind people who wait until the last-minute to pull out their wallet and then go digging for the exact change.

2. Cashiers who insist on packing all your groceries before taking your money or payment. Then you feel like you’re in the way of the next customer while you put your money and wallet away.

3. Cashiers & bank tellers who carry on lengthy conversations with someone instead of serving the next customer when you’ve already been waiting too long.

4. People wearing iPods with the volume turned up so loud that you can hear it sitting 3 seats away on public transit.

5. People who have loud cell phone conversations in public. I don’t care what you did on the weekend.

6. Loud annoying ring tones.

7. People who litter.

8. Not being able to find a trash can on the streets.

9. Pet owners who don’t stoop and scoop.

10. Public washrooms that are over-deodorized. Just because it smells clean doesn’t mean it is!

11. People on public transit who soak themselves in perfume or aftershave. Have they never heard of ‘a little dab will do ya’?

12. People who wear so much perfume/cologne that it hangs in the air long after they’ve left the room.

13. More people who wear too much perfume/cologne and the wind blows it to you from 10 -15 feet away.

14. Stores that use scented pucks in their ventilation system.

15. Having to walk through the perfume section to enter a large department or drug store – not the greatest for anyone with Asthma, COPD or chemical sensitivities.

Do any of these things annoy you?

What are your pet peeves?

This is what’s bugging me today!

Bloggers Who Think They’re Better

January 13, 2011 9 comments

I knew that I would probably get Trudy’s back up with my post yesterday and I was right. She read my post and left me a 7 paragraph comment and I was debating whether I should approve it or not. It wasn’t so much a comment as it was a rant similar to her posting of the other day.  This is what’s bugging me today!

Now we are all entitled to our opinions. She gave us hers, I gave you mine. But there is nothing to say that I have to post her rant to my blog. After all, this is my little place to blow off some steam.

I took a nap to sleep on whether I should approve her comment and how to respond but when I returned, I discovered that she had posted the comment to her own blog with yet another rant. I guess she wasn’t too happy when I hadn’t approved her comment yet. I don’t work on her time schedule, I work on my own.

I was planning on approving it, but not anymore. If there is anyone interested in reading it I’m sure you can track her blog down.

No links to her posting today, but I will quote a couple of her own statements from it. I see that some of my observations weren’t far off.

  • However, some took it personal, also accused me of “high horse” status and were angered that I wouldn’t do this type of project for 2011.
  • However, I am used to the “elitist” and “high horse” types of accusations I am labeled with.
  • I do find it interesting that a blog with a title “Things In Life I Find Annoying” would blog in opposition to my post about a pet peeve.

To the last one, is nobody supposed to blog in opposition of her viewpoint?

Her post I found annoying, her views I found annoying. She just doesn’t seem to get it, she’s allowed to have her pet peeve and I’m allowed to find it annoying!

Now this is the last I am going to say on this. She can continue if she likes, but I’m moving forward and leaving this behind. Which she should have done yesterday!

This is what’s bugging me today!

p.s. I would like to end with this quote.

Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.
You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.
You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.
You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.

Trudy’s Pet Peeve with bloggers…

January 12, 2011 23 comments
Monkeys Blogging

Image via Wikipedia

This is what I had originally planned to post yesterday and I am now glad I held off because yesterday produced some fantastic results.

This is in response to Trudy’s posting of Jan 10/11 talking about PostADay bloggers. Now I had some thoughts about linking to Trudy’s post but in the end you need to read it to fully understand that this is what’s bugging me today?

my pet peeve with bloggers…

Trudy, yes it could become tiring at times to keep reading about blogging, but not everyone finds it easy to write and to post daily. But every one of them has joined the challenge because they want to improve their writing, their commitment to post every day or every week.

Give us a break, it’s now Day 12 and there are still plenty joining. I am sure that once things settle down and people get into their blogs and what they feel comfortable writing about things will improve. Yes, there will be some that will probably continue with the whole blogging thing and there is nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to read them but I’m sure others will.

Yes, I am one of the ones that talk about blogging and I will tell you why. Because I enjoy helping people and encouraging them to reach goals that they thought they could never achieve. Just like a parent teaching their child to ride a bicycle for the first time everyone needs encouragement.

I don’t normally do this but I am going to toot my own horn. Read my post of yesterday, the day before and the day before that. Heck, read all of them. Because of the response I have had to these posts, several of my readers have connected with each other to support each other during the challenge. The evidence can be found on these two posts.

The ‘Like’ Button, Comment’s & Pingback’s – Help Us Learn!

How does blog’s buddies can keep you motivated ?

Would this have happened if were weren’t all talking about blogging and we all just went back to our blogs, read the topic suggestions and tried to write a daily post? I don’t think so.

The Daily Post from Scott Berkun has been great. The postings are like mini-forums, scanning down the list to see if there is anything of interest.  I’ve noticed that you’ve posted several times on the list.

I read one where you said the following.

I don’t think the ultimate objective of the wordpress contest is for “best writing” but simply for consistent (daily/weekly) writing and practice.

First – it’s not a contest, it’s a challenge.

If talking about the challenge is what they feel comfortable writing about right now, let them write it. As long as they are writing daily/weekly then they are achieving their goals and will get better with time. I am sure they will tire of writing about the challenge.

So yes, I am talking about blogging again today, but it’s only in response to your rant.

So get off your high horse and enjoy the fun like the rest of us are. Trudy this instructional is for you, if you want to try and find something on the long lists of replies:

There’s your tip of the day!
