Housekeeping ‘IS’ a Chore

January 22, 2011 25 comments

Housekeeping is a choreIt’s Saturday, which means it’s time for some blog housekeeping again. This is what’s bugging me today!

Last weekend was busy for me, as I decided to change my theme and there is still some work to do. I’ve seen a lot of updated blogs this week, with new pages, new themes and many of you have also updated your about pages and written a post on it. It’s a great way for us to get to know you.

I still haven’t done mine. Oh, I did a little update to it saying I would add more but just can’t seem to sit down and write about myself and put myself out there. It’s easy to do here on the blog because I’m usually telling a story about what is or isn’t bugging me and it serves a purpose. But I know I need to do it and give you a little more about myself.

I’m making a commitment to update my about page over the next few days, as long as I can hit the publish button when I’m done.

How many of you are in the same position as me?

It’s nice to see everyone is displaying the PostADay2011 & PostAWeek2011 badges proudly on their blogs. Did it feel good putting it there? I know it did for me. 🙂

Here are some of my housekeeping chores for the weekend.

  • cleaning up my tags and settle on the main ones to use
  • review my Categories
  • review the blog and add links to other postings

The last one could take a bit of time, but it’s easier to do it now before the job gets so huge that I won’t want to do it. Why is this important? Linking to past articles and other pages on your blog increases your page views and keeps the reader on your blog.

This also helps to Improve Your Search Rankings and receive more visitors to your blog. Listing related articles at the bottom of your post is a great way to do it, but you can also link to other posts/pages within your posts by marking a word or phrase in bold and linking to it.

I have my work cut out for me this weekend.

This is what’s bugging me today!

Human Spammers Posing as Genuine Bloggers

January 17, 2011 21 comments

As some of you know, I had another blog set up, Your Place to Rant, where WordPress members who didn’t want to post a rant on their own blog, could come to rant. Don’t bother clicking on the link, I’ve changed it to private. After reading another blogger’s post on Human Spammers, I came back and checked mine and found that I was also a victim. This is what’s bugging me today!

Because I set it up as a Group blog where any registered WordPress member could post, they just came along and started posting either a rant or a comment. That also brought them over to this blog and they posted comments here too. They are a pest, a nuisance and I did not want to have to deal with them every day. When I realized this I changed the other blog so I would have to approve every post and comment before it appeared and then slowly realized that this would end up taking a lot of my time which I would rather spend writing or reading. So this weekend I shut it down.

They leave the same comments on blogs all over the Internet and if you do a search on the comment you will find it listed thousands of times. I am not going to rehash every thing that  you can read in the post, but what I want to do is give some ideas on what to look out for. Akismet catches the most common ones, but I’ve found that the WordPress Challenge has brought out more of them.

  • comments that are pretty generic
  • brand new blog started for the challenge
  • gravatar has nothing listed but their name
  • about page not updated
  • name not linked to blog

Now I know that there are still new bloggers out there who haven’t linked their names and not updated their profile on their Gravatar and this is in no way meant to discredit them. If you are one of them please read Bloggers With No Links. Personalize your blog in some way, update your About page, include links to your favourite blogs or sites you visit. Add something to show people you are a real blogger.

When someone new leaves a comment on my blog, I check out the blog before I approve it. If it’s a new blog and questionable I go back to the comment that was left and search Google for the phrase using quotes to match it exactly. If I don’t like the results, the comment doesn’t get approved.

Be careful when you’re approving your comments. They are just looking for links.

This is what’s bugging me today!

or not – It’s Been Four Years Mom – Ti amo

January 16, 2011 23 comments

Four years ago today I lost my Mom to stomach cancer. She was the fourth in my family to die of this terrible disease. I lost my Dad in ’98 to leukemia after he had survived prostate cancer, my oldest brother in ’02 to liver cancer and an older sister in ’04 to ovarian cancer. I miss them all.

The holidays are always such a difficult time for me. I miss my Mom so much and for some reason this past holiday season was the worst of them all. When we offer our condolences to others we all seem to say it gets better with time but does it really? It seems was I able to deal with it better just after she died, but now I can’t think of her without crying and missing her.

She was a courageous woman, emigrating in 1952 to the new world with 5 children on a ship across the ocean, to join her husband who was working to build a new life for them in Canada. There were 3 more children born in Canada.

There was one particular moment this past Christmas when I just couldn’t stop thinking of her and I wrote this piece in the wee hours on Christmas day. Today I want to share it with you.

Can Magic Make A Wish Come True

Watching the snow swirling and seeing the snowman come to life in the movie “Jack Frost” starring Michael Keaton, stirred some emotional memories.

A little boy plays a magic harmonica that was given to him by his father before he died, and the snowman the boy built, in the image of his father comes to life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if things like this could really happen.

If I could make a wish it would be to bring back someone special in my life, my Mom. She would have celebrated her 90th birthday this month, and next month is the 4th anniversary of her death.

I miss her dearly and there were so many things left unsaid. Oh, she knew I loved her and how much I cared for her, and appreciated her. But if I could have Mom back for just a few hours to tell her how much I miss her and love her, say thank you for all she’s ever done for me, my daughter and all her family and friends.

Magic, can it make a wish come true?

Housekeeping Can Be A Chore

January 15, 2011 26 comments

Housekeeping is a choreWith the challenge well on its way and blogging buddies a great success, it’s time to get down to some housekeeping – on the blog that is. This is what’s bugging me today.

Well, it’s not so much bugging me but it is a chore!

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I put this blog fairly quickly. I found a simple clean theme to work with knowing I could always change it. I’ve added things haphazardly and it’s now time to clean it up a bit.

You will see some changes over the next few days with new pages added and hopefully a new theme.  Which brings me to today.

I’ve always read that there are four principal pages every new blog should have and a navigation bar listing the pages either at the top or in the side panel.

  • Home
  • About
  • Archives
  • Contact

Since most of us here have our blogs on WordPress, not a self-hosted domain name, the theme we select takes care of the first two pages.  The other two are fairly easy to add. It’s important to have a Contact page because some visitors may not want to post a comment but would prefer to send you an email.

But not all themes support a navigation bar at the top. The theme I am using,  The Journalist v1.9, does not come with the navigation bar at the top. I liked this feature at first but not sure about it now.  One thing I’ve tried to do during my visits to blogs is to make a note of the blog themes I like and don’t like.

I know that if you’re a techie you can edit CSS, but I’m talking to some new bloggers who just want the basics and to able to work with the options available in their theme.

Another important item you should have on your page is a way for your readers to subscribe. Remember not all visitors to your blog are WordPress members. Add your email subscription form to the side panel, along with giving your readers the ability to subscribe to your RSS news feed.

Well that’s enough for today, time to get to my housekeeping.

This is what’s bugging me today! 😉

p.s I’ve decided to put the other blog, Your Place to Rant,  on hold for now but more on that later.

or not – A Time to Rest

January 14, 2011 18 comments

This last week has been exciting, tiring and the best week I’ve had here on the blog. There is nothing bugging me today and it’s time to take a rest.

So today, I am bringing you the

11 Commandments For An Enthusiastic Team

by Ian Percy.

  1. Help each other be right … not wrong
  2. Look for ways to make new ideas work … not for reasons they won’t
  3. If in doubt … check it out! Don’t make negative assumptions about each other
  4. Help each other win and take pride in each other’s victories
  5. Speak positively about each other and about your organization at every opportunity
  6. Maintain a positive mental attitude no matter what the circumstances
  7. Act with initiative and courage as if it all depends on you
  8. Do everything with enthusiasm … it’s contagious
  9. Whatever you want … give it away
  10. Don’t lose faith … never give up
  11. Have fun!

Something for the Blogging Buddies to ponder.

There is nothing bugging me today! 🙂

Trudy’s Pet Peeve with bloggers…

January 12, 2011 23 comments
Monkeys Blogging

Image via Wikipedia

This is what I had originally planned to post yesterday and I am now glad I held off because yesterday produced some fantastic results.

This is in response to Trudy’s posting of Jan 10/11 talking about PostADay bloggers. Now I had some thoughts about linking to Trudy’s post but in the end you need to read it to fully understand that this is what’s bugging me today?

my pet peeve with bloggers…

Trudy, yes it could become tiring at times to keep reading about blogging, but not everyone finds it easy to write and to post daily. But every one of them has joined the challenge because they want to improve their writing, their commitment to post every day or every week.

Give us a break, it’s now Day 12 and there are still plenty joining. I am sure that once things settle down and people get into their blogs and what they feel comfortable writing about things will improve. Yes, there will be some that will probably continue with the whole blogging thing and there is nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to read them but I’m sure others will.

Yes, I am one of the ones that talk about blogging and I will tell you why. Because I enjoy helping people and encouraging them to reach goals that they thought they could never achieve. Just like a parent teaching their child to ride a bicycle for the first time everyone needs encouragement.

I don’t normally do this but I am going to toot my own horn. Read my post of yesterday, the day before and the day before that. Heck, read all of them. Because of the response I have had to these posts, several of my readers have connected with each other to support each other during the challenge. The evidence can be found on these two posts.

The ‘Like’ Button, Comment’s & Pingback’s – Help Us Learn!

How does blog’s buddies can keep you motivated ?

Would this have happened if were weren’t all talking about blogging and we all just went back to our blogs, read the topic suggestions and tried to write a daily post? I don’t think so.

The Daily Post from Scott Berkun has been great. The postings are like mini-forums, scanning down the list to see if there is anything of interest.  I’ve noticed that you’ve posted several times on the list.

I read one where you said the following.

I don’t think the ultimate objective of the wordpress contest is for “best writing” but simply for consistent (daily/weekly) writing and practice.

First – it’s not a contest, it’s a challenge.

If talking about the challenge is what they feel comfortable writing about right now, let them write it. As long as they are writing daily/weekly then they are achieving their goals and will get better with time. I am sure they will tire of writing about the challenge.

So yes, I am talking about blogging again today, but it’s only in response to your rant.

So get off your high horse and enjoy the fun like the rest of us are. Trudy this instructional is for you, if you want to try and find something on the long lists of replies:

CTRL + F    Find
CTRL + G    Find again.

There’s your tip of the day!

This is what’s bugging me today!

or not – That’s what I want to be remembered for!

January 11, 2011 22 comments

I had a really good rant set up for today, but it all slowly changed yesterday. First there was today’s topic which I could work with. Slowly throughout the afternoon things kept building to the point that I could not sit and write an annoying post when I was feeling on top of the world.

For anyone who hasn’t been reading my blog, I have always tried to live my life by the Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I have always given of myself only asking for a smile and kind word in return.

All I have ever wanted is to help those that I can. No special recognition, just a smile and a thanks. Because in the bigger picture, I hope that they will remember what I did for them and in turn, do the same for another.

I’ve received plenty of thanks from of all my readers and they all put a smile on my face. Thank you to everyone.

Yesterday I received so much praise it feels odd writing about it.

The day started with a Carlaat, a fairly new reader to the blog, left a comment and called it the page of the Post A Day fairy godmother.

A fellow blogger, Lonediamond, paid me the highest compliment I could ever hear from someone – she said you are making a good mentor

Lonediamond, you don’t know how much that means to me. I’m humbled.

My English Thought, then called this blog, her Godmother’s Blog. I’m humbled even more.

And if that wasn’t enough, to top off my day, along came Papa Joe with not one, but two compliments.

You really are classy Rose. I admire your ethics.
Thanks for being a person of character.

That’s what I want to be remembered for!  🙂

or not – maybe? How will PostADay2011 play out?

January 10, 2011 22 comments
P writing blue

When I started this blog it had a different purpose, but joining the WordPress PostADay2011 Challenge and meeting some great fellow bloggers, I’m not sure if I can keep it on the same track. I don’t want to write about annoying things everyday. This is what’s bugging me today!

That’s the reason I have the “or not” posts. I had to add something to the title of the post otherwise people would think I found it annoying. Now I think it confuses them and they come to see what it’s all about.

But I don’t want to talk about what’s bugging me today.

What I want to do is share, what I think is some good information with my fellow bloggers in the postaday2011/postaweek2011 challenge. It’s been sitting in my Google Reader since the day this challenge started and I finally had a chance to read some of it today.

It’s a Best of 2010 list and there are 21 postings on it. I checked some of them out and the posting themselves have links to other postings with good information so I thought I would post it for everyone.

I especially wanted to share it with one of my readers, My English Thoughts, who is blogging in English daily when French is her first language. Now here is someone who has really taken on the challenge!

Here is one posting from the list I do want to share with you today.

10 Steps to Becoming a Better Writer

4. Write even more than that.
5. Write when you don’t want to.
6. Write when you do.

8. Write when you don’t.
9. Write every day.
10. Keep writing.
