Day 60 of the WordPress PostADay2011 Challenge, only 305 to go. There is nothing bugging me today! šŸ™‚

My blog is still evolving and it has a lot to do with the fact I took a risk in February and launched the RandomBlog2011 Challenge. This coincided with the Random Acts of Kindness Week Feb 14-20, 2011.

And if that wasn’t enough of a challenge for me, on February 14, Scott Berkun liked one of my posts on topic suggestions and featured it on The Daily Post at WordPress.com.

I had some challenging times that week keeping up with everything that needed to be done for the challenge, replying to comments and still keeping up with my regular blog reading.

Then yesterday a friend emailed me to let me know that the very first post on this blog, and why I started the blog, was mentioned in a system update to their members. It looks like I got their attention because they’ve made improvements to the site which address some of the things mentioned in my post.

I’m proud of the fact that I finally got over my fear of hitting the publish button. That’s one of the things that was holding me back from taking this blog to where it is today.

As to what’s in store for me the rest of the year, is anybody’s guess.

Special mention to Ryan at INSIGHT for starting the Weekly Photo Voting. He visited 60 blogs to find the best 10 for you to vote on. The first topic to be voted on is Boundaries.

or not – Sunday At Last

Things in life I find annoying, RandomBlog2011 Challenge, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011Sunday is finally here! I’m hoping this means I can get some well-deserved rest. There is nothing bugging me today! šŸ™‚

Don’t have a lot to report on except to say that February has been exciting and I’m looking forward to what March has in store for all of us.

I’m finally finding some time to read the backlog of posts in Google Reader and I should be caught up soon.

How many of you like the Daily Post Topic Idea from yesterday? Does it sound familiar at all? Wonder where Scott Berkun got that idea from?

While Plinky does have good ideas, some of them I’m not that crazy about but there are bloggers who really love them.

Check out Trying to Find Topic Suggestions if you’re looking for some writing ideas.

I heard from Amy ā€“ Other Awesome Things and she told me that her blog was only 4 hours old when I left my comment. Amy said she’s had more hits on this blog than any of her other attempts at blogging, has made new friends and is looking forward to this blogging experience.

I want to say a special thank you to Jackie at Post A Day Challenge 2011. She has done so much to help promote the RandomBlog2011 Challenge by republishing my posts and sending out new posts dedicated to the challenge.

In case you missed them, two of the blogs I discovered last week were “Freshly Pressed” recently.

or not – Some Housekeeping Goodies

Housekeeping, Things in life I find annoying, RandomBlog2011 Challenge

Today’s post is a little different from the one’s I’ve written in the past. Instead of letting you know what I need to take care of, I’m letting you know what I have taken care of over the past week working on the RandomBlog2011 Challenge. There is nothing bugging me today! šŸ™‚

I’ve done a lot of housekeeping on the blog this week from adding the copyright to creating new pages and changing pages. I’ve had quite a time taking care of everything.

Yesterday I added 3 new pages to the blog but it wasn’t a simple task because I had to co-ordinate the publishing times with my new post. I used a combination of publishing the page/post as private and using the shortlink instead of the URL. If you ask me now what I did when and in what order I wouldn’t be able to tell you.

Some of this involved setting up a new parent page for the RandomBlog2011 Challenges. Normally it wouldn’t be a problem but when you need to leave the current page intact so visitors can still see it, before all the changes are made, could be a bit tricky.

It was a challenge timing everything, but all I know is that when everything was published the links worked.

Goodies, Things in life I find annoying, RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011Goodies

Tip

You can get the shortlink to the new page or new post before it’s published. Once you save a draft of your post/page the shortlink is created. This lets you link to it before it’s posted.

This information is from WordPress.com.

How can you use it?

There is now a ā€œGet Shortlinkā€ button next to your permalink when you edit or write a post, and when you click it youā€™ll get a popup with the beautiful link already highlighted for your copy and pasting pleasure.

If youā€™re logged in you can also get the shortlink for any page on WordPress.com, thereā€™s a link under the ā€œBlog Infoā€ menu in your admin bar.

Tip

I finally added the copyright to my blog which meant having to go through the blog and add the copyright to each post and page. This took a fair bit of time but it’s done now and it will be much easier going forward.

Here is a short recap of how to add the copyright to your blog using the WordPress sample found here.

  • Insert your name and blog title into the sample copyright statement.
  • Add it to your side-bar using the text widget.
  • Add yourĀ  Ā© 2011 Blog Title and/or Name to the bottom of each post/page.

Tip

Instead of copying and pasting the Ā© symbol hold down the Alt key and type 0169 (Alt0169) on the number pad. If you use the numbers in the upper row of your keyboard it won’t work.

Two other symbols that might come in handy are:
ā„¢ = Alt0153
Ā® = Alt0174

Tip

Did you know that if you click the “Like” button again once you’ve already clicked it and it says “You like this“, that it takes you to your “Posts I Like” page on WordPress.com

You can test it out after you click the “Like” button on this post. šŸ˜‰

I haven’t had much time to visit very many new blogs but I did visit three and here they are. I’ve already sent out Tweets on Twitter using the hashtag #randomblog2011.

I haven’t done much of my regular reading either over the past two weeks but I’m going to try to do some of it this weekend.

or not – At Last, Here It Is

February 25, 2011 31 comments

RandomBlog2011 Challenge, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011It’s finally ready, what everyone has waited for, the new RandomBlog2011 Challenge. There is nothing bugging me today! šŸ™‚

There are just a few things to mention today.

Not a lot has changed but it will make a big difference in the weeks to come when we’ve all discovered so many new blogs to read that we might not be able to keep up with all of them.

I felt that there was no way we could continue at last week’s pace of reading 2 blogs every day. Going forward there is no daily minimum number to read.

Since the poll results showed that most of you read 3-5 blogs per day, that would be far too many blogs along with the ones you are already reading. That is if we want to have a life outside of blogging.

I would like to suggest that you try to read 3-5 new blogs every week. This is only a suggestion. How many blogs you choose to read depends on how many you can handle.

Remember this isn’t a contest, it’s meant to help you connect with other new bloggers to share experiences, to support and encourage each other and to introduce them to others taking part in both the RandomBlog2011 Challenge and the WordPress PostADay2011 PostAWeek Challenge.

In the last update I let you know that I will be using Tweets on Twitter to send out updates to the RandomBlog2011 Challenge. You can find this information by reading the last update and on the new challenge page.

Just something else I want to mention. Over the last few weeks I’ve received several blog postings with no title. Sometimes it’s fixed right away, other times it’s not. It can happen to anyone and what I’ve done is to subscribe to my blog and when I receive the email on the new post I give it a quick check. If there is a title missing it’s easily spotted.

That’s it except to tell you I’ve added new pages to the blog today and if I’ve published everything in the right order they should all be there now with working links. If not, please check back they will be soon.

There is nothing bugging me today!

or not – Challenges of a New Day

February 24, 2011 12 comments

RandomBlog2011, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011I am ready and comfortable to meet the challenges of a new day. There is nothing bugging me today. šŸ™‚

Each day brings a new challenge and you either face it or run from it.

There is no sense in running and hiding from it because it will be there ready to raise its ugly head again until you deal with it.

Unless you face certain things they will begin to tear you apart.

I choose to face the challenges and learn from them.

From Life Success Zone.

I am thrilled with the set of challenges each day brings. Challenges are the unexpected plunges in the rollercoaster of life.

Even when I donā€™t know what lies ahead, I am sure that I can make the most of the ride. Each challenge I complete successfully pushes fear further away from my mind.

I love the feeling of achievement. A great accomplishment is a natural high. Yet, triumph only comes after a battle is fought and won. Therefore, challenge must exist if I want to enjoy sweet victory.

This battle is over and I won.

I am comfortable because I know that the tools to overcome any trial are within me. I am comfortable because I know that there is nothing on my plate that I cannot handle. I feel privileged to have been chosen for each challenge that I face.

  • How do you react to challenge?
  • How do challenges make you a better person?
  • What can you learn from your performance in yesterdayā€™s challenges that will help you today?

There is nothing bugging me today!

or not – RandomBlog2011 Challenge Update

February 23, 2011 28 comments

RandomBlog2011 Challenge, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011, Twitter, TweetThis is just a quick update to let everyone know I’m still working on the new page for RandomBlog2011 Challenge. There is nothing bugging me today!

Instead of publishing full posts every day for the RandomBlog2011 Challenge, updates will go out as Tweets on Twitter. I will still publish updates in some of my daily posts but if it’s something quick I will instead send out a Tweet linking to the new information.

This is the best way to keep everyone informed on updates. So if you want the latest updates, you might want to follow me on TwitterFollow me on Twitter .

If anyone doesn’t have a Twitter account you can sign up here.

One of the things changing is a new way for you to let other bloggers know what new blogs you’ve visited. You can do this by using the hashtag symbol “#” and randomblog2011. If you’re using the WordPress Publicize feature you can retweet your own posts using the hashtag symbol.

  • #randomblog2011

This is similar to The Daily Post using #postaday2011 and #postaweek2011.

Here is some information from Twitter on using hashtags.

Hashtags: helping you find interesting Tweets

  • People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search.
  • Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category.
  • Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet.
  • Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.

Here is an example of a Tweet using the hashtag symbol.

I think that about covers it for now.

Too Many Things Today – Prevent Content Theft

February 22, 2011 43 comments

I don’t know where to start today because there are just too many things bugging me. This is what’s bugging me today!

Now, I normally tell you what’s bugging me and why and then try to offer my solution. Today I’m not sure what the solution is and I don’t want to go into details now. But I do suggest that you read the following and take the necessary steps to protect the content on your blogs if you haven’t already done so.

Instead of just giving you the link to the page at WordPress.com, I’ve chosen to include it in my post because I know that many won’t click-through but if it’s here you will at least give the list a scan.

Let’s just say this is part of what’s bugging me today and why I have finally added my copyright to the blog and Copyscape.

I’m suggesting that you think about this and consider doing the same.

Prevent Content Theft Ā« Support ā€” WordPress.com.

TOS & Copyright

Prevent ContentĀ Theft

, ,

There are several steps that you can take in order to prevent your material from being used in an unauthorized manner. Keep in mind, however, that there is no way to fully guarantee the complete protection of your work (after all, this is the internet).

If your content is found to be stolen, please review the necessary steps to file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice:

1) Include a very clear copyright notice on your blog. In this, be sure to specify what you will allow and will NOT allow. Here is an example of a valid copyright notice that may be placed on your blog:

Ā© [Full Name] and [Blog Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blogā€™s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Blog Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.

Place the copyright notice in your sidebar so that it may be visible at all times; this can be accomplished using a text widget from Appearance -> Widgets in the menu. Moreover, be sure to include a copyright note in each and every one of your blog posts (either at the beginning or end of the article).

Your wording of the copyright notice should differ, depending on the type of blog you currently maintain. The aforementioned example notice is most appropriate for your standard blog. If you have a photo blog (or blog that is highly focused on some sort of document type), you may want to modify the language accordingly.

2) Obtain an appropriate Creative Commons License, according to how much you are willing to share. You can, similar to the first option mentioned above, designate precisely what you will and will not allow regarding your personal work and obtain an official license according to these guidelines. Free licenses may be obtained here. Even if you decide to obtain and use a Creative Commons License, it is recommended that you still include a copyright notice, as illustrated in the first point within this article.

3) Configure your RSS feed so that it displays post summaries. This will add an extra layer of protection against scrapers using RSS feeds to illegally obtain their content. You can set this option from the Reading Settings.

4) Search for your content using Google. This is fairly easy to do; simply take chunks of your blog posts, and search for the identical contents on Google and/or other search engines (enclosing the contents in quotations helps). Otherwise, you may never know if your content is being stolen or scraped; bloggers are not always aware of unauthorized use that is taking place. If you do, in fact, discover that your content is being stolen, you may take the necessary steps to file a formal DMCA notice.

5) Set up a Google Alert to scan for your name or blog name/title. You can set up a custom Google Alert here ā€“ http://www.google.com/alerts. Note that you do need a Google account.

6) Use Copyscape. You can use the serviceā€™s search feature to check for unauthorized copies of your pages and even include a free banner on your blog. There are also even paid services, including automatic web monitoring.

7) Protect your images and other documents, as well. Although you are not able to completely prevent the copying of your images and documents, it is highly recommended that you place a watermark on them in or order to thwart any unauthorized use. Normally, this can be accomplished within the filesā€™ respective editing programs (Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.). Run some Google searches or check out the documentation of your particular software package for more information on this. There are also several third-party applications that allow you to add watermarks to images.

8) Get some more information and even report sites over at http://stolen.wordpress.com

This is what’s bugging me today!!

Trying real hard to keep the smile on my face.
