or not – A Little About Me and the Blog

January 3, 2011 40 comments

Some might think that from the title of the blog and the website address that I am a very angry person – I am not! I try to go through life with a smile on my face, helping others when I can and offering encouragement. One thing from my childhood that has stuck with me through all the years is the Golden Rule. So you won’t always read about things that are bugging me today but you might read some of my or not postings where I talk about things that make me happy and put a smile on my face. The or not postings have turned out to be quite refreshing for my readers. Check them out!

Hi everyone, I said I would post at least once per week and I’m just making it by re-posting one of my old photos. Today’s posting is also special because July 24th is my cat’s birthday.

Cinnamon is 19 years old today – Happy Birthday Cinnamon!

Happy 19th Birthday Cinnamon!

She doesn’t do much except sleep these days especially with the heat we’re experiencing. I think she may be going a little blind and also hard of hearing. Cinnamon has always been a nervous cat and would jump at the slightest noise but these days I practically have to be on top of her for Cinnamon to hear that I’m near.

She also can’t jump very high anymore so there is only one window that she can easily look out of.

Things in life I find annoying

I guess I should have put up a “Gone Fishing” post.

I needed to take a break but I didn’t think it would be this long. I’m doing fine healthwise and I have actually gained a few pounds – might have to buy some new clothes.  🙂  I’m still skinny but for one of the few times in my life, I don’t have a flat stomach. Last time I remember having a belly was 24 years ago when I was pregnant.

To everyone who has left me messages, sent me emails and tweets, I’m sorry if I’ve caused you concern.

I’m trying to respond to all of you personally but it’s going to take me some time to get through all the emails and read the comments on my blog.

I went offline in March and didn’t come back until the end of June. There was a lot happening and I may tell you about some of it another time.

For now I’m back but I won’t be posting every day. I’ll try for at least once a week and take it from there.

Thank you to everyone who is still subscribed and my new subscribers. Even though I hadn’t posted anything in 3 months you still took a chance on me coming back to my blog. Thanks again and I hope I don’t disappoint you.

You guys have been awesome with your concern and support and I feel like sh** for just leaving and not putting up a “Gone Fishing” post like my friend PiP did.

I’ve missed you guys and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with everyone.

There is nothing bugging me today!

How To Deal With Blogs and Vacations

March 23, 2011 42 comments

Spring officially arrives today at 7:21 p.m. EDT 032011Spring has arrived with people starting to think about planning summer vacations. But this year, some may feel they have a problem because they’ve committed to post to their blogs every day and aren’t sure how they’re going to keep up with it. I’m having a tough time right now just keeping up. This is what’s bugging me today!

Before even summer vacations come around, we have long weekends to deal with. April brings us a long weekend with Good Friday and Easter, in the month of May, we have Victoria Day for the Canadians and Memorial Day for the Americans and I’m sure there are others happening around the globe.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about your blog during these times. What happens if something unexpected comes up and you’re called out-of-town? Wouldn’t it be nice if you had some posts already lined up and ready to publish.

I know I would love not having to worry about my blog during times like that.

We know we can use the scheduling feature to post into the future but first we have to write them. So what do you write about.

Here are some ideas that I’ve offered to others before:

  1. If you love reading, write a short book review, include an excerpt from the book.
  2. If it’s poetry you love, let people know why in a few sentences and include the poem.
  3. Is there a favourite quotation/s that you like. You can do the same here as you did with the poem or book.
  4. Use the WordPress Press this‘ feature and reblog someone else’s post.
  5. Check your ‘Posts I Like‘ and see if there are any you would like to reblog. The feature is right on the page.
  6. Post some photos and tell a story.
  7. Write about your favourite food and maybe post a recipe.
  8. Write shorter posts – make your blog post a 2 or 3-parter.

Which is what I’m doing today! Because if I continue it’s going to be too long. Part 2 with more ideas tomorrow.

The ideas I mentioned above are great to have on hand, ready to publish for those days when you just can’t come up with something or are pressed for time.

What are your plans for the summer?

Will you be taking your blog on vacation with you or will you put up a “Gone Fishing” post?

This is what’s bugging me today!

Trying To Keep Up

March 22, 2011 22 comments

Things in life I find annoyingI try not to be too negative in my writings but I’m having trouble keeping up. This is what’s bugging me today!

Today I want to quote 2 sentences from “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” by Richard Carlson.

#2 Make Peace with Imperfection

I’ve yet to meet an absolute perfectionist whose life was filled with inner peace.

As you begin to eliminate your need for perfection in all areas of your life, you’ll begin to discover the perfection in life itself.

Now I’m not sure that I can stop trying to be a perfectionist completely, but I have to accept that sometimes just doing the best that I can is good enough.

This is what’s bugging me today!

Links Not Opening In New Windows

March 21, 2011 37 comments

This is just one of those little things I find annoying. This is what’s bugging me today!

There are many people who don’t like links opening in new windows but I’m not one of them. When I’m reading a blog/website and click on an external link I like having it open in a new window and keeping the original blog/website open so I can easily go back to it.

If I don’t find the link interesting, I just close down the window and I still have the original blog/website to continue reading.

A good reason to have external links open in new windows is to keep your visitor on your blog as long as possible. Because if your visitor finds the link you’ve provided very interesting he/she may never make it back to your blog.

This is how I like to handle links on my blog.

  • External links – open in new window
  • Internal blog links – open in same window

The default when you choose to add any hyperlink is to open in the same window.

WordPress offers us the option of linking to other sites through Zemanta and the “Recommended Links“, the major one being Wikipedia. Even though the default is to open in the same window, you can change this by editing the hyperlink and clicking on the “Open link in a new window/tab”.

If it’s photos you’re adding from Wikipedia or another site you have to go to the Advanced Settings tab and scroll down to check the box to have the link open in a new window.

By doing this, you now keep your visitor on your blog and the other site opens in a new window. I find this especially important if you list other sites in the “Related Articles“. This gives your visitor a chance to read any comments and hopefully add their own comment to your blog.

How about you? Do you like links opening in new windows?

This is what’s bugging me today!

🙂

or not – How To Add Copyright To Photos

I know I usually write a Housekeeping post on Saturdays but this week I’ve chosen to do this instead which has been part of my blog Housekeeping over the past week. There is nothing bugging me today!

This information will probably be helpful to anyone taking part in the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge.

How To Add Copyright To Photos Using Picasa

I don’t have Photoshop, so I’ve used Picasa to finally add the copyright symbol – © – to my photos.

It was actually quite easy.

Open Picasa
Select your photo
Select Text

How to add Copyright Symbol
Select the Font, Size, Style, Colour and add anywhere in the photo – don’t worry, the text can be moved if you don’t like the position.

How to add Copyright symbol using Picasa

Nothing is changed on your original photo until you click the Apply button and save the file.

When I saved my photos, I added the copyright symbol © to the file name using the keyboard shortcut Alt0169. This is an easy way to recognise which photos you’ve added the copyright to.

To insert the copyright symbol ©, hold down the Alt key and type 0169 on the numeric pad on your keyboard. For those who have a laptop without a separate numeric keypad, hold down both Alt and the Fn keys to activate the numeric pad on the keyboard. Look for the small blue numbers.

You can also insert the copyright symbol using the Custom Character button Insert Custom Character in the Visual post editor but you have to make sure you are showing what WordPress calls the Kitchen Sink.

WordPress Post Editor showing Kitchen Sink

The Kitchen Sink button is the last one in the row. Kitchen Sink Button

It’s really not that complicated to add the copyright, just remember to save your photo with a different name so that the original isn’t changed.

Will you be adding the copyright to your photos?

I’m getting out of my writing slump but I couldn’t resist going out to see if I could find some signs of Spring in the neighbourhood. And I did! There is nothing bugging me today!

In keeping with the yellow flowers I posted yesterday I even managed to find a couple of yellow Crocus poking up out of the ground.

Being In A Slump

March 17, 2011 44 comments

Classyrose, Things in life I find annoying, PostADay2011, PostAWeek2011, Randomblog2011, challengeI’m in a writing slump. This is what’s bugging me today!

There are so many things I start writing about but I just can’t seem to finish them. Just don’t seem motivated to write the last few days. It doesn’t help that I haven’t been feeling too good either.

Is it just that I’m tired of winter?

Instead of the February blahs, I’m experiencing the dreariness of March.

Is it the change in weather? Where I’m teased one day into thinking spring is almost here only to get a blast of cold air the next day and realize that it’s still winter. It was warmer out today but there was a cold wind blowing.

I want to throw off the winter coat, hat, scarf. I want to sit outside and bask in the sunshine.

I want to see flowers poking up out of the ground, buds on the trees, the splashes of bright yellow from the forsythia bushes.

Do you get into writing slumps?

How do you get out of them?

I’m tired of winter.

This is what’s bugging me today!

when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

or not – I Live My Life…

March 16, 2011 16 comments

Things in life I find annoyingTaking another break from writing today.

There is nothing bugging me today!

I Live My Life to Please Only Myself | Life Success Zone.

I am who I am and this is all that I can be. I am perfectly comfortable and happy with who I am as a person. Though it may seem trivial to say these words, this short message packs a powerful punch.

Other people may go through life trying to look or act like someone else, but I avoid participating in this foolish fad.

I am comfortable within my own skin. I am proud of my career, my love life and the social choices I make. I know that I am a beautiful, attractive and intelligent person within my own right.

Some people may find me to be the epitome of perfection, while others may prefer a different cup of tea. Both opinions are okay because I live my life to please only myself and those closest to my heart.

I realize that many of those who pass judgment on others do so because they are unhappy with themselves. So regardless of what others think, I know that I need only please myself.

I may have a plump shape or too thin a figure, imperfect facial features or a hairstyle that is far from the norm, but my imperfections make me perfect as I am. They make me value my unique self. In a sea of silicone and plastic surgeries, my imperfections allow me to stand out from the crowd in a good way.

Today, I value myself. My individuality gives me the confidence to feel good about myself.

Are you comfortable with who you are?

There is nothing bugging me today!
